Breastfeeding

I encourage all mothers to breastfeed.  Breastfeeding is vitally important to both you and your baby.  Your body makes milk specifically designed to your baby’s needs.  Breastfeeding reduces your baby’s chances of illness, allergies, and dental caries as well as promoting appropriate jaw, teeth, speech and overall facial development.  Breastfeeding reduces your chances of breast and ovarian cancer, saves time & money, the hormones released by baby suckling help your uterus shrink back down and help you to relax.

La Leche League of Rolla is a chapter of La Leche League International, an international, nonprofit, nonsectarian organization dedicated to providing education, information, support, and encouragement to women who want to breastfeed.  All breastfeeding mothers and mothers-to-be interested in breastfeeding are welcome to attend meetings or to call the Leader for breastfeeding help or information.  A lending library of approximately 40 books about birth, breastfeeding, and parenting is also available to members.

There is also a chapter in the Fort Leonard Wood/Waynesville area.

On a personal note, La Leche League has helped me more than once.  When I was a new, very young, very scared mom and had breastfeeding troubles, I called the local leader (who had never even met me) to get some answers.  She spent quite awhile on the phone, talking patiently with me, and then offered to come to the hospital for more support.  After my third child was born, January 2009, I again found myself in need of some breastfeeding answers.  I had my husband call our local leader, Molly Remer, at 5am!  She promptly and politely helped me thoroughly.  The support these two women gave was invaluable and I won’t forget it.  Should you find yourself in a similar situation, please do not hesitate to call!
