Scheduled births are on the rise, there’s no disputing that fact. Many factors contribute to this, both on mom and doctor side. I believe education is the key to changing this. Education for mom on the due date trap, risks of induction/surgical birth, and ultrasound inaccuracy (especially late). Education for doctor on truly informed consent as well as the long-term effects of preterm births, including late preterm.
Our bodies are designed to carry our babies and give birth to them on an unknown-to-us time schedule. Most of the time, labor will start on its’ own when baby is ready, anywhere from 38 to 42 weeks. Pregnancy, labor, and birth are all one process with each step being intertwined with the next. Interfering with one step can affect the entire process.
